Solar Contractor GL Insurance: What Standard Policies Miss
By Josh Cotner

If you're a solar installation contractor carrying a standard commercial GL policy, your coverage may have gaps you won't discover until a claim arrives. Standard GL was designed for ground-level commercial contractors — not for crews working on rooftops, penetrating roof membranes, and wiring electrical systems connected to utility grids.
Here's what solar contractor GL needs to cover that standard forms often miss.
Roof Damage — The Most Common Gap
Rooftop solar installation inherently involves penetrating the roof. Flashing, conduit, and mounting hardware all create penetration points. Improperly sealed penetrations create leak pathways. Improperly installed flashings fail under weather exposure.
Standard GL policies contain a "your work" exclusion that limits or eliminates coverage for damage to the specific work you performed. In rooftop solar, this can mean the policy excludes the roof damage caused by your penetrations.
Solar contractor GL addresses rooftop operations specifically, including coverage for post-installation leaks and membrane damage traced to your crew's work — not just third-party incidents on the site.
Completed-Operations Coverage Term
A solar system installed today may have a performance dispute or a leak claim three years from now. Standard GL's completed-operations coverage has a time limit — typically two to four years, sometimes shorter.
For solar contractors whose installations carry 10-25 year performance expectations in the mind of the homeowner or commercial client, the standard completed-operations tail may be too short for your actual liability exposure.
The "Your Work" Exclusion and Rework
The "your work" exclusion in most GL policies removes coverage for the cost of redoing your own defective work. This is distinct from coverage for damage to the property owner's structure or belongings caused by your defective work.
In solar, both exposures exist:
- Damage to the homeowner's interior from a penetration leak (property owner's structure)
- The cost of repositioning panels installed at the wrong location on the roof (rework)
Standard GL may cover the first but not the second. Understanding which type of claim you're actually at risk for — and whether your policy addresses it — matters before the claim arrives.
Electrical Operations and Arc Flash
Solar installation involves electrical work — both AC and DC. DC electrical incidents (short circuits, arc flash from battery storage systems, improperly isolated string circuits) are among the more severe hazards in solar installation.
Some standard GL policies have endorsements or exclusions related to electrical operations, particularly for work connected to utility grids or involving high-voltage DC systems. Confirm your GL addresses the electrical operations your crew performs — not just physical damage and bodily injury from non-electrical causes.
Products Liability for Installed Components
When you install a solar panel, inverter, or battery system that later fails and damages the property owner's home or injures someone, there may be a products liability component to the claim — even if you didn't manufacture the product.
Solar contractor GL with products liability coverage addresses claims arising from the equipment you install becoming part of the property. This matters when a component failure causes a fire or electrical incident after installation and the property owner looks to you as the installer.
How to Review Your Solar GL
When reviewing your current GL for solar operations, ask:
- Does it include completed-operations coverage, and for how long?
- How is the "your work" exclusion written — does it cover damage to other property caused by your work?
- Are rooftop penetration and flashing operations covered?
- How are electrical operations on energized systems treated?
- Does products liability coverage extend to components you install?
At Contractors Choice Agency, we review your current GL against these solar-specific criteria and tell you where your gaps are. Call 844-967-5247 or get a quote in 15 minutes.
